Salaries and Payroll in Hungary in 2026

Hungary remains a strong choice for international companies in 2026. Labor costs are still lower than in Western Europe, and the system is stable and easy to understand. Recent updates bring moderate wage increases, while tax rules stay unchanged, creating a predictable environment for business planning.

Minimum Wages: What Has Changed

From January 2026, minimum wages have increased to reflect inflation:

  • HUF 322,800 gross for roles without qualifications
  • HUF 373,200 gross for roles requiring at least a high school diploma

If your employees earn less than these amounts, you must raise their salaries and update contracts. These levels also affect the minimum contribution base for managing directors.

The increases are always moderate and predictable, allowing businesses in Hungary to plan ahead without sudden cost pressure.

Payroll Taxes: Simple and Stable

Hungary also offers a clear payroll system. Salaries are always agreed in gross amounts, and taxes are deducted from this.

In 2026, tax rates remain the same:

  • Employees pay:
    • 15% Personal Income Tax
    • 18.5% Social Security
  • Employers pay:
    • 13% Social Contribution Tax on top of the gross salary

This means your total cost increases only when salaries increase. There are no unexpected tax changes!

Employers handle payroll, tax calculation, and monthly reporting to the Hungarian Tax Authority. ITL Group is always ready to help you with it.

Increasing Net Salaries Without Higher Costs

Hungary offers several ways to increase employees’ take-home pay while keeping company costs under control.

Family tax benefits can increase employees’ net income by reducing the tax base. Families with three or more children can receive up to HUF 198,000 extra per month. These benefits are mainly available to Hungarian residents.

Fringe Benefits: A Smart Tool for Employers

Fringe benefits are widely used in Hungary and can also help you to attract talent.

  • SZÉP Card: Annual limit is HUF 450,000. Until April 30, 2026, it can also be used for groceries!
  • SZÉP Card – Active Hungarians: Up to HUF 60,000 per calendar half-year, i.e. a maximum of HUF 120,000 per year for sport and health maintenance purposes.
  • Housing allowance: Up to HUF 150,000 per month for employees under 35, which is taxed at a favorable rate.

These benefits support your business by improving employee satisfaction while keeping payroll costs under control.
